Using CSS in
Dreamweaver 2004

It's all change again in Dreamweaver - there's no real alternative to CSS in MX 2004 - so no more dodgy font tags and other old style markup messing up the place - instructions follow for creating and attaching stylesheets in Dreamweaver MX 2004.

By the way, it's all pretty similar to earlier versions so if you've still got an older copy you should be able to make sense of these instructions as well.

Creating CSS in Dreamweaver MX 2004

Creating and editing CSS in Dreamweaver MX 2004 is slightly more complicated than it has been in previous versions. It starts as ever with...

Open the CSS Styles Panel. Window>CSS Styles

Click the New Style Button (that's the one with the little plus on it at the bottom ot the pallette)

Choose which Type of CSS Style you're creating

Make sure you're not creating the style rule in This Document Only.

If this is the first time you've created a Style for this site Dreamweaver will ask you where you want to save your CSS file. Save it in your site folder.

Define your style rule

Attaching CSS to a page in Dreamweaver MX 2004

Open the CSS Styles Pallette. Window>CSS Styles

With your document open click on the Attach Style Sheet Button

Navigate to Style Sheet and click OK!

Cut Down on CSS Confusion!!

Although CSS editing in MX 2004 is a ton better than in previous versions there's a preference that needs to be set to stop serious potential confusion.

Whenever you edit a stylesheet rule in Dreamweaver MX 2004, it opens up the CSS text file in another window. This happens whether you use the Style Definitions Dialog box or the Tag Inspector and 'cos you don't notice that it's been opened things get confusing.

Because this behaviour is so dammned confusing the Moreton advice is to get yourself to the Preferences and, from under the CSS catagory, uncheck the bottommost option, Open CSS file when modified.
