How to make a Favicon
Dunno if you've noticed those unique icons that appear next to the name of some sites in your Favourites menu.
Well you would if you were running IE on a PC anyway 'cos this trick doesn't work in too many other browsers.
If you're running the required set up but can only see generic icons try making a Favourite of this page (you mean it wasn't already?).
Now see what I mean?. That little custom icon is a Favicon. I'm sure you want to know how to make one and it's very very easy...
Create your graphic
You need to create your graphic as a 16 by 16 pixel image. When you've created it you'll need to find a way to save the image as a 4bit (16 colours) file.
I used a peice of Mac shareware called Graphic Convertor which made it very easy to reduce the bit depth. However I've not yet found the bit of software which will do it for you on the PC - If you know please let me know.
Save it as a .ico file
Once the image has been created at the right size or bit depth then it needs to be saved as a Windows Icon file (.ico). Again I used Graphic Convertor to this, but there are a few bits of shareware on the PC which will do it to. Try BMP2ICO which converts between BMP files and ICO files.
Once you 've done this name the file "favicon.ico" and save it in to the top level of your site. Now when someone bookmarks your site your Favicon will appear in the their Favourites list.
